Who we are
Self Driving Cars 101 is an open professional community for people working on autonomous vehicles. This site is operated by Doron Tsur, based in Israel. For privacy questions, reach us at privacy@selfdrivingcars101.com.
What we collect, and why
We try to collect as little as possible. Specifically:
When you submit the contact form, we receive your name, email address, message, and the time you submitted. We also log your IP address and browser user agent to help spot abuse. Legal basis: legitimate interest in responding to your message (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)).
When you answer a scene poll, we store your choice, an optional free-text reply, and demographic context derived from your request: country, region, device type, operating system family, language, and time zone. We do not store your IP address or name. We store a one-way hash that prevents you from accidentally submitting the same scene twice. Legal basis: legitimate interest in aggregating opinion data for research and editorial use (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)).
When you subscribe to our newsletter, we store your email address, the source you signed up from, and a timestamped record of your consent (including IP address and browser user agent at the moment you confirmed). Legal basis: your consent (GDPR Art. 6(1)(a)).
When you load the site, our server logs record standard request metadata (IP, user agent, URL, timestamp, response code) for 30 days to help diagnose problems and detect abuse.
Cookies
We use a small set of cookies, listed in full on our Cookie Policy page. In short:
- Strictly necessary cookies make the site work. They remember which scenes you've already answered and store your consent choice. These are always on.
- Analytics cookies (Microsoft Clarity) help us understand how people use the site. These are set only after you accept them in the cookie banner.
You can change your choice any time from the Cookie preferences link in our footer.
Who we share data with
We use a small number of trusted service providers to run the site:
- Resend (US). Sends our transactional and newsletter emails. They receive recipient email addresses and message contents. Resend's privacy notice.
- Vercel (US). Hosts the site. They process incoming requests, including IP addresses. Vercel's privacy notice.
- Neon (US). Stores the data described above in a managed Postgres database. Neon's privacy notice.
- Microsoft Clarity (US). Collects analytics about how people use the site (session recordings, heatmaps), only after you accept analytics cookies. Microsoft's privacy notice.
We do not sell or rent your personal information. We do not share it for marketing purposes.
International transfers
Our service providers are based in the United States. Where we transfer personal data outside the EU/UK, we rely on Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) approved by the European Commission to provide an adequate level of protection.
How long we keep your data
- Contact submissions: 24 months after submission.
- Scene answers: kept indefinitely; they are not linked to identifying information.
- Newsletter subscriber records: kept while you are subscribed. After you unsubscribe, we retain your email on a suppression list for 12 months to ensure we don't accidentally re-add you, then delete it.
- Server logs: 30 days.
Your rights
If you are in the EU, UK, California, or another jurisdiction with privacy laws, you have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you.
- Correct anything inaccurate.
- Delete your data, subject to our legal obligations to retain some records.
- Restrict or object to processing in certain cases.
- Withdraw consent at any time (for newsletter subscriptions, click the unsubscribe link in any email).
- Receive your data in a portable format.
- Complain to a supervisory authority in your country.
To exercise any of these rights, email privacy@selfdrivingcars101.com. We respond within 30 days.
Children
This site is not directed at people under 16, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has submitted data to us, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. For material changes (new data categories, new sub-processors, new purposes), we email all confirmed newsletter subscribers. Routine corrections (typos, contact-email updates) are silent, but the Last reviewed date at the top of this page always reflects the most recent edit.
